DUBS Review

DUBS

Our own Eric Yo reviews the newest acoustic filters by DUBS, the latest attempt to protect your hearing without losing audible quality.

As you exit the cab after a night at the club and walk to the front door fumbling for your keys you realize 2 things.

First, you’re glad you took a cab home as that last drink did you in. Second you still have a pair of DUBS “advanced tech ear plugs” in your ears

Yes, that’s right, not only did you actually use hearing protection, you wore them the entire night and didn’t notice.

Everyone that frequents concerts, clubs or loud environments has experienced that post event muffled sound and ringing. That is hearing damage.

Most of us do not have the money to get fitted for the high end custom molded earplugs that will inevitably be lost. We sure don’t have the time to go through that process. Hell, we don’t even make the time to grab a box of those hideous neon orange foam earplugs that make everything sound muffled.

Enter DUBS Acoustic Filters. A cost effective hearing protection option created by Fritz Lanman and co-founder and Doppler Labs CEO Noah Kraf. These “Acoustic Filters” are a perfect blend of form and function. Sleek, stylish and comfortable enough (at least for me) to wear, yet effective enough to help protect your ears without overly sacrificing quality of sound or having to take them out to have a conversation.

At first, their appearance did not not warrant the $25 dollar price tag. But don’t let the compact simple design fool you. According to their website, the DUBS contain “17 individual parts, utilizing premium materials like stainless steel, ABS, polymer foams and silicone.” Their Advanced Tech Earplugs “use Dynamic Attenuation, an intricate mechanical process that filters sound and have a “12dB Noise Reduction Rating (NRR)” The DUBS utilize a “combination of filters to match the way the ear’s sensitivity to sound changes based upon the loudness of the signal. [the] filters provide a response curve that approximates these changes…”

The “slight” drawbacks were the uncertainty of how long they will last, and the lack of interchangeable sizing options. A keychain pouch or carrying case would have been nice but that’s me being picky! Over all the DUBS are great. They are inexpensive, they look nice and most importantly protect your ears. The $25 dollar price, which in perspective equal 2-3 drinks at your average night club, are affordable. If they are lost, the fear of breaking the bank to replace them is not a factor. They worked well on the dance floor and in a conversation at the bar. At the end of the night, I didn’t have the usual ringing in my ear. Money well spent!
