We speak with Asheville crew ADBC about their successful reign over DNB in the North Carolina region for the past two years.
Can you give us a brief history of the crew?
ADBC was initially formed when Jon Roten and John Wolf met at work in Asheville North Carolina. They started mixing together in August of 2011 and got a few gigs as Matiq and CollectiveONE. After taking 1st place in a NC statewide all-genre mix competition they realized they were unfulfilled by the infrequency of their gigs and the general state of Asheville’s nightlife already in play. Not long after that Joe Matingly joined the crew and by January 2012 we started up doing strictly DnB shows every other week. Eventually moving to another venue where we became a weekly, now residing every Sunday night at Timo’s House on Biltmore Ave, in Asheville, NC.
How long has the crew been officially going?
Since January of 2012
Who are your current resident djs?
The members of our collective are Cymatic, CollectiveONE, Aloysius (Wish), Crux, DLX, Big Ben, secret_nc, Terrence Young, Prayz, D:raf, Arc Angel Gabe Real, Mary B, Ryan Cross, Xist, Liminal, Mix Master Doc, Realize and John The Stranger.
In a world engulfed by “EDM” what do you contribute the nights longevity to?
Immediately people were aware of the love and effort we put into the events showcasing DnB. We have stood strong throwing an upfront Drum and Bass weekly while EDM nights have come and gone. We are on our 4th year, making us the longest running electronic music event in Asheville. Part of our success is that, along with booking international and national artists, we have reached out to surrounding cities and supported our regional DnB talent as well.
What are your Top 5 Favorite memories or milestones?
That’s a tough one to answer because we’ve had so many great memories in just a few short years, like:
- Hosting Klute in 2013
- The time Paradox missed his flight and none of his gear showed up with him
- Hosting the Union BBQ in 2012 that brought together many of the regional DnB family here to Asheville for a two room all DnB event that lasted for 12 hours and connected many of the regional players for the first time
- Having both Random Movement and Paradox to Asheville twice to perform for us
- Taking Collective “fieldtrips” to big shows in other cities.
If you could pick any 3 djs past, present, or future for a dream line up who would they be?
Loxy, Dj Lee, Fabio & Grooverider, and Jumping Jack Frost if we could choose four
Do you have any advice for new promoters?
Do it for the love of the music. Be good people. Be good ambassadors of Drum and Bass and this music will last forever.
