Lead by drum & bass pioneer Shimon, Audioporn has been making their presence felt over the past twelve months. Having brought forward some of the genre’s most groundbreaking talent, including the likes of relative newcomers Benny L, Trimer and Arnone, they continue to provide a pedestal for blossoming producers on the label. And for their next output, High Maintenance once again steps forward for his take on one of dance music’s most longstanding subgenres. Already stunning audiences with his most recent output ‘Broken Pieces’, the Brighton based artist has shown his technical progression over the years, demonstrated on his new release.
‘Breathe In ft. Ayah Marar and the single’s reverse ‘Know the Way’ highlights the story telling within High Maintenance’s production. His knack for sound design also doesn’t go unnoticed, as it’s instantly recognisable through the rising synths of ‘Breathe In, which features the renowned vocal crescendos of Ayah Marar. ‘Breathe In’ is the perfect peak of any set, giving an emotive twist to the drum & bass prototype whilst laying down more heavy-hitting foundations. Throbbing subs help to give the track a thumping breakdown, while the record streams with clacking percussion. High Maintenance shows how he’s beginning to hone in on his signature, crafting his own platform through his imperative engineering. With the summer season drawing closer, ‘Breathe In’ presents the soundtrack. It’s an offering which is sure to become a staple across the live circuit throughout the coming months.
Know the Way’ moves on the reverse with a distorted voice overture and careful layers of twisted bass. It delivers a slightly more subdued flipside, however High Maintenance still adds an edge throughout every sixteen bars with his meticulous composition and unique style. He epitomises the more poignant side of Audioporn’s roster; a roster which has been making its mark alongside the game’s major players. And sitting on the cusp of festival season, there’s not been a better time for High Maintenance to unleash these cuts onto his budding fan base… As with Audioporn as a creative hub the contemporary drum & bass world is sure to take note.
James Smith, aka High Maintenance, may appear a relative newcomer to the drum and bass world, but he did not need time to catch the attention of some of biggest names in the game. Shortly after releasing some digital tracks in 2009, this producer’s producer began to hear his tunes on John B’s podcasts; it wasn’t long before he was sought after by a number of respected drum and bass labels. In early 2011, High Maintenance opted to sign onto Shimon’s Audioporn Records and DisasZt’s Mainframe Recordings, releasing the single ‘With You’ / ‘Nowhere’ on Audioporn, as well as the ‘Don’t Lose It EP’ on Mainframe, and a remix of Camo & Krooked‘s ‘Watch It Burn’ on Hospital Records. And High Maintenance continues to deliver with this beautiful release.
